Cesar Nortiel Maradiaga lost one of his legs to a mine in 1987. His father had a coffee farm in Patio Grande, Nicaragua and Cesar was bringing his father lunch. As he crossed the coffee fields he stepped on a landmine hidden among the plants. Cesar knew that there were mines in the areas but as he says, “I was only 16, bringing lunch to my father, it was almost an adventure.” Now Cesar has his own farm in which he grows and harvest grain. He received some technical education as a veterinarian, and often tends the animals of his neighbors after his daily work. Cesar has never let his disability get in the way of working hard and still wears the wooden prosthetic leg that was fist given to him 20 years ago. He lives with his mother, brothers and their wives, and is asking for a loan to improve his grain business.
