Silvio Aguilar lives in El Triunfo, Honduras, a coffee growing community in Choluteca. In 1985 was chasing down one of his cows when he stepped on a landmine. The cow had separated from the heard and Silvio was running after it when he felt an impact around his leg. “At first I thought I had been shot, but then I looked down and realized it was a mine. I was devastated.” Silvio’s injury was minor compared to other mine victims and at first doctors did not have to amputate his leg. Unfortunately, due to poor medical care, his leg became infected and eventually had to be amputated above his left knee. Now Silvio cultivates corn and watermelon. He needs a loan in order to improve his farm and make it generate more income.
